FX-100TM

Introduction

FX-100™ is a clear two-part, intumescent coating with a substantially lower activation temperature than other intumescent coatings. This early protection allows the use of FX-100™ on substrates that most intumescent coatings cannot protect, including wood, some plastics, and other combustible substrates with low ignition temperatures.

Upon exposure to heat or flame, the FX-100™ coating intumesces, building a foam char up to 100 times the original applied coating thickness. This foam char provides a functional fire barrier, protecting the substrate against both heat and flame.

The FX- 100™ coating expands to form a protective layer that insulates the material beneath from the flames, acting as a passive fireproof barrier for up to 10 minutes. This coating will protect the materials beneath for a period of time so building occupants have more time to react to emergencies safely.

Application Instructions

FX-100™ is two part system that is typically applied with a roller or a brush. Properly applied FX-100™ provides Class A or Class B protection. FX-100’s™ Class A rating was achieved at 8 wet mils on Douglas Fir. The product may be used on most surface types as long as the product adheres to the substrate. It is recommended that a small sample be tested for adhesion prior to full-scale application. Flame Seal Products also has a non-flammable primer/tie coat (ADH-1™) available for helping FX-100™ stick to hard-to-adhere-to surfaces, such as plastics.

FAQ

HOW DOES FX-100™ WORK?

When the coating is exposed to fire, or sufficient heat, it produces a thick carbon

char foam that acts as a protective barrier between the fire and the surface

applied to. It also releases water and carbon dioxide which help to cool and

extinguish the flame.

HOW IS THE PRODUCT APPLIED?

The FX-100™ coating and the T-50™ curing agent are thoroughly mixed at a 4:1 ratio by

volume. The product can be applied via spray, brush or roller.

WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF THE PRODUCT?

One year from the Date of Manufacture.

HOW DO I GET THE FX-100™ TO DRY FASTER?

Decrease the humidity level in the curing environment. Moving air across

the surface helps. Increasing the curing environment temperature to 80-90F.

Heating the FX-100™ resin to 90-100F and mixing it with the T50 at ambient

temperature has two advantages – It reduces the viscosity which helps some

applications and it reduces the tack time significantly…

FX-100™ IS TOO THICK FOR MY APPLICATION. HOW CAN I THIN IT?

The first recommendation is the heating option mentioned above. If that is not

enough then you can add water by heating BOTH the FX-100™ and the water to

130-150F and then slowly mixing in the water. Start with 5% by wt and build

from there. Do not exceed 20-25%. Do not add the T-50™ until the thinning is

completed. The T-50™ amount should stay the same as would be used for the

original FX-100™ amount – T-50™ does not react with the additional water.

CAN/SHOULD FX-100™ BE TOP COATED?

It is recommended that FX-100™ be top coated to protect it from moisture/

humidity and abrasion – particularly in high humidity or high traffic interior

applications and ALL exterior applications.

FX-100 ™ coats – Do not exceed manufacturers recommended coating

thickness.

Interior- Clear – Duplicolor T125 Clear Topcoat.

Latex – Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior Latex – for both interior and exterior

applications.

PLASTICS

Adhesion to plastics is a complex issue because of the myriad of plastics and

their different surface characteristics. We recommended, first roughing the

plastic, cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and coating. If that does not work, we

recommend trying our ADH-1™ adhesive as a primer for the FX-100™. Boeing has

had a good deal of success with this method.

WHAT TYPE OF FILM DOES FX-100™ FORM?

FX-100™ dries very rigid over a period of several weeks to several months. As

such, it is not suitable for flexible panels and applications or ones that incur

marked temperature expansion and contraction. The ADH-1™ primer may help in

some of these situations. Choose FX- 100™ today if you need a high-quality fire-retardant coating for wood, plastics, and other materials.
